The Fence
The fence, represented as a red barrier set by the ride leader, serves to prevent riders from exceeding the established pace and assists in regrouping. The ride leader will have three configurable options on their screen to determine the distance in seconds for the fence ahead of them. It is crucial to note that the fence aligns with the ride leader’s pace, not with that of any riders at the front of the group. If a rider breaches the fence, whether through distraction or increased exertion, a 60-second countdown will begin, allowing them to return to the ride leader promptly. Riders kicked from the ride within the first 30 minutes may utilize the late join facility to resume with the group. However, after this period, late join will no longer be available. The ride leader will provide necessary instructions regarding the operation of the fence during our rides.

Late Join
Late Join. This facility allows participants to join the event within the first 30 minutes of the ride, making it a convenient option for those who may be running late from work. By clicking on the Late Join option, you will be paired with the yellow beacon blob, ensuring that you can seamlessly integrate into the ongoing ride. This feature is also beneficial if you find yourself drifting away from the main group draft. Riders around the yellow beacon will maintain the advertised pace, but if separation occurs, it may become significantly more challenging to keep up, leading to increased effort levels. Our sweeps are dedicated to assisting riders who fall behind; however, if you are within the first 30 minutes of the ride and are unable to rejoin the group, we highly encourage you to utilize the Late Join facility.

Ride Sweeps (Red Beacon)
The sweep crew, strong and powerful in their abilities, works collaboratively to create a draft for those in need of assistance. This significantly reduces the effort required for riders to maintain pace and return to the ride leader. Sweeps not only push high wattage—often exceeding their advertised pace—but they do so with a level of skill and commitment that is truly impressive. They embody the spirit of camaraderie and support that makes our riding community exceptional. Their role is vital, and I believe it is important to recognize them as the superheroes they are, tirelessly working to help many riders enjoy the experience.

Ride Leader (Yellow Beacon)
Our Yellow Beacon, plays a vital role during our organized cycling events. Leading a group ride requires not only the ability to maintain a consistent pace but also the capacity for clear communication and direction. The responsibilities of a ride leader extend beyond merely setting the pace; they include providing instructions on climbing techniques, monitoring wattage, regrouping strategies, and welcoming new participants to our community at ZZRC. It is important to acknowledge that, despite our leaders' best efforts, minor fluctuations in pacing may occur, as they are, after all, only human. Moreover, during the ride, leaders are engaged in various tasks such as documenting the experience through photography and responding to riders’ questions, all while fostering a supportive and encouraging atmosphere. Their dedication enriches our rides and contributes significantly to the camaraderie within our cycling group.

The Blob
The best way to describe this is very simple: it is where riders tightly group together and ride as advertised. This takes control and concentration, but once you have it, you will benefit from the best blob draft ever. The bigger the blob, the better the draft, and the easier it is for everyone. Blob riding is the way forward to enjoy any group ride. Blob riding = riding smart. Why push more when the draft will help you? So, blob up around your ride leader and enjoy the ride!

Ride Buddies
These dedicated individuals sacrifice their own ride to support and encourage those who may be struggling. Ride Buddies ensure that no one rides alone, providing unlimited support throughout the journey. They are here to alter the pace to suit each individual's needs, creating a comfortable and encouraging environment for all. It's important to clarify that Ride Buddies are not sweeps, and they will not push you to get back to the group. Their primary aim is to help you finish the ride at your own pace, not to push you to your breaking point. With their support, you can focus on enjoying the ride without feeling pressured.

Coffee Stop
Coffee Stop allows you to step away from Zwift for a short time without getting dropped in non-competitive events. Coffee Stop gives you up to 3 minutes to step away from your ride for any reason. Grab a bottle, take a bathroom break, or even have a coffee without falling behind the group you’re riding with. Coffee stop can be started from the action bar menu. You can take one 30-second Coffee Stop in the first 5 minutes of your ride, and one 3-minute Coffee Stop every 30 minutes during the rest of your ride. You can't take a Coffee Stop during the last 15 minutes of a time-based event or the last 5 km of a distance-based event. Coffee Stops are also not allowed during competitive events and races. Finally, to use it, you have to have at least 1 other Zwifter near you going the same direction.

Discord
Discord is a free communication app used by ourselves on ZZRC Events. It enables us to talk directly with the crew, as well as other riders. It can be a fun place to be on a ride. Discord links are available on all our events in the Zwift Companion App.

Ride Etiquette
We kindly ask all riders to show respect to our Leaders, Sweeps, and Ride Buddies. These team members generously volunteer their time to help make every ride run smoothly and enjoyably for everyone. To support our Sweep team in doing their job effectively, we have a simple approach in place to help keep things seamless. If you’re keen to lend a hand, we’d love for you to check in with the Red Beacon team first. They’ll be happy to let you know whether extra help is needed or if the current sweep team has things well in hand. We do ask that only the official ZZRC Sweep Crew provide guidance on sweep matters. When multiple riders begin offering advice or instructions, even with the best intentions, it can sometimes create confusion and make the sweep role more challenging. Please don’t take it personally if your kind offer of help is declined—it just means the team has things under control. Our Sweep Crew is out there almost every day, and having too many helpers can make it harder for them to focus on those who truly need support. Thank you for helping us keep the rides safe, smooth, and enjoyable for all!
