From Peloton to Zwift: A Midlife Rider’s Journey by Lynn Jeppesen-Thomson

I started my indoor cycling journey with Peloton during lockdown - like many did - drawn in by the motivating instructors, and the excitement of leaderboard competition. But after a while, I was curious about something different—something that felt more like “real” cycling. That curiosity led me to Zwift and I sold the Peloton bike and bought a Wattbike. At first, it was overwhelming: new routes, strange group ride lingo, and an hour in the saddle felt like forever. But everything changed when I found ZZRC. They were friendly, supportive, and suddenly I wasn’t just pedaling, alone I had ride buddies, a club, and real motivation to push through.

What surprised me most about Zwift wasn’t the technology or the training plans—it was the people. The community was welcoming, especially in ZZRC, where no one cared how fast you were, just that you showed up. Ride leaders gave me encouragement, group chats kept things light (and hilarious), and there was always someone to draft behind on the tough climbs. Zwift also made cycling fun. Whether it was chasing sprint jerseys, unlocking new kits, or exploring the virtual roads of Watopia and Makuri Islands, there was always something new to look forward to. It didn’t feel like a workout—it felt like play. And then there were the goals. Personal ones, like riding for a full hour without giving up. Hitting a new FTP. Completing a group event without getting dropped. Zwift gave me structure, progress, and that great feeling of achievement every time I hit a milestone. Now that I’ve found Zwift and ZZRC, it’s become more than just a hobby—it’s a way to keep (relatively) sane, my weight in check, and my body strong. Midlife brings its own challenges, and Zwift gives me structure and motivation that’s hard to find elsewhere. I’m not chasing KOMs or racing for podiums. I’m riding to stay sane, to feel stronger, and to prove to myself that fitness doesn’t have an age limit. Zwift helps me do that, one ride at a time. And with ZZRC and the virtual cycling world behind me, I’m excited for what’s ahead—more miles, more sweat, and maybe a few more jerseys in the drawer.
